How to Apply Honeywell PTM7950 - The Practical Way
Step-by-step PTM7950 application from a UK repair shop: the freezer trick, cutting to size, film removal, and why a ripped pad still works fine.

This is how I actually apply genuine Honeywell PTM7950 on the bench - the method I use daily on laptops, consoles and GPUs. No datasheet jargon and no lab only instructions: just the practical steps, and honest notes on which "rules" matter and which don't.
What you'll need
PTM7950 piece (cut to size, or a larger piece and scissors)
Isopropyl alcohol, cotton buds and a microfibre cloth
Clean tweezers for smaller pieces
A small ruler - plastic is fine
1. Measure roughly — smaller is better
Measure the die and don't aim for perfection. If anything, cut about 0.5 mm smaller than the die. A slightly smaller piece is easier to work with: once PTM7950 touches the die it grips, and if the piece overhangs you end up fighting to move a very thin, sticky material. Undersized or slightly uneven is completely fine - PTM7950 liquefies at operating temperature and flows to fill the gaps.
2. The freezer trick (optional)
If you're doing this for the first time, put the sheet in the freezer or fridge for a few minutes before cutting. Cold PTM7950 is firmer, cuts cleaner, and the protective films peel more easily. After years of doing this I work straight from room temperature - but the cold trick is a genuine help for a first attempt.
Either way, store the material somewhere cool for longevity. We keep our stock in a fridge at 10 °C.
3. Clean the die properly
Remove the old paste or pad, clean the die with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud, then polish it off with a microfibre cloth - the microfibre pass matters, because cotton buds leave tiny lint fibres behind and you don't want them under the pad.
4. Cut to size
A small ruler gives you the general size; cut with clean scissors or a blade. Again - smaller or uneven is perfectly fine. This material is self-correcting: it melts, spreads and settles where it's needed.
5. Apply it
Peel the film from one side, align the exposed face on the die, press it down, then peel the remaining film while pushing air out with a cotton bud as you go.
For small pieces I do it differently: peel the whole film off one side first, then lay the piece onto the die with clean tweezers. Less fiddling, no torn corners.
If a piece rips while you're handling it - don't bin it. Lay the parts on the die anyway. It liquefies under heat, flows together, and sets back solid when cool. A "ripped" installation performs the same as a perfect one.
6. Reassemble - no lab required
Honeywell's documentation talks about applying a minimum static pressure for a period of time. In real life: reassemble the clean heatsink as normal and you're done. Nobody repasting a laptop at home has calibrated pressure equipment, and a properly mounted heatsink provides everything the material needs.
Temperatures typically improve over the first few heat cycles as the material burns in, so judge your results after a few sessions of normal use, not the first boot.
The short version
You can't really go wrong with PTM7950. Cut it a touch small, keep the die clean, get the films off without trapping big air pockets, and mount the heatsink properly. The material forgives everything else - that's exactly why it's what we use on the bench every day.
